Professional Piano Repairs Across South Wales
From sticking keys and broken strings to action regulation and larger workshop repairs, Piano Tuning Company provides professional piano repairs across Cardiff, Newport, South Wales. Many repairs can be completed in your home; for larger jobs, the piano action can be taken to our workshop.
Over 40 Years' Piano Repair Experience
Robert King has over 40 years' experience working with upright and grand pianos. Having begun his training as a teenager, Robert was professionally trained in piano tuning, repairs and the mechanical workings of the piano action.
His specialist training in piano regulation was undertaken with the Chief Piano Regulator at Knight Pianos.
This experience enables Robert to diagnose problems within the piano action and determine whether an instrument requires a straightforward repair, adjustment, regulation or more extensive work.
Repairs can include sticking or uneven keys, broken strings, worn or broken action parts, pedal problems and faults affecting the touch and response of the instrument. Many repairs can be carried out during the initial visit, while more extensive action work can be completed in the workshop.

From a sticking key or broken string to action problems, soundboard issues and extensive restoration work, we can diagnose problems and advise on the most appropriate solution.
Many piano faults can be repaired during a visit. Where more extensive work is required, we can assess the instrument and explain the available options before proceeding.

Soundboards, Bridges & Structural Problems
The soundboard is at the heart of an acoustic piano and problems can sometimes develop through age, movement, changes in humidity or previous damage.
We can inspect and advise on:
• Cracked soundboards
• Loose soundboard ribs
• Buzzes and rattles
• Bridge problems
• Bridge pins
• Structural problems
• Loose or damaged components
• Problems caused by excessive dryness or humidity
Not every visible soundboard crack means that a piano requires major restoration. The instrument should be properly assessed to establish whether the crack is causing a genuine structural or acoustic problem.
Upright Piano Backcloths
The backcloth fitted behind many upright pianos can deteriorate, become damaged or disappear completely over many years.
We can advise on the repair or replacement of upright piano backcloths as part of the maintenance or restoration of an instrument.
Piano Casework Repairs & French Polishing
As well as his experience as a piano technician, Robert trained in French polishing at the London College of Furniture over 40 years ago and has extensive experience in traditional furniture and piano restoration.
Over the years, Robert has also trained more than 50 students in the art of French polishing and restoration, passing on traditional skills and techniques developed over four decades.
Piano casework services can include:
• Traditional French polishing
• Piano casework and cabinet repairs
• Scratches, marks and damaged finishes
• Casework cleaning and detailing
• Colour matching and sympathetic finish repairs
• Restoration of faded or deteriorated finishes
• Cleaning, polishing and restoration of older piano cabinets
• Restoration and reconditioning of piano casework
Where appropriate, the aim is to preserve and restore the character of the original finish rather than unnecessarily replacing it.
Damp Chaser & Piano Life Saver Systems
Robert has first hand experience of Damp Chaser systems dating back to his training at Knight's Piano Factory in Loughton, Essex, where Damp Chaser systems were manufactured and Robert was involved in their production.
Changes in humidity can have a significant effect on an acoustic piano, particularly its tuning stability and wooden components.
We can advise on Damp Chaser and Piano Life Saver humidity control systems where appropriate, including installation, maintenance and servicing.
A humidity control system can be particularly useful where a piano is situated in an environment subject to significant seasonal changes in humidity.
Piano Action Repairs & Regulation
The thousands of individual components within a piano action gradually wear and move out of adjustment.
Problems can include uneven touch, sluggish notes, repeated notes failing to respond correctly, excessive movement, noise and poor control.
We undertake action repairs and regulation to restore the correct operation and responsiveness of the instrument.
Where appropriate, repair and regulation can transform a piano without the expense of complete restoration.
Piano Voicing & Tone
If a piano has become excessively bright, harsh, uneven or dull, the problem may not be tuning alone.
Voicing involves working with the hammers and action to improve the quality, balance and consistency of the piano’s tone.
Please see our dedicated Piano Voicing page for further information.
Piano Servicing & Deep Cleaning
Older and neglected pianos can accumulate many years of dust, debris and deterioration internally.
Alongside mechanical servicing, we offer specialist internal cleaning and attention to areas that cannot normally be reached during ordinary household cleaning.
Please see our Piano Servicing & Deep Cleaning page for further information.
Restoration & Reconditioning
Sometimes an individual repair is only part of a much larger problem.
For older, worn or neglected instruments, reconditioning or restoration may be the more appropriate solution.
We can assess the condition of the piano and advise whether repair, reconditioning or more extensive restoration is worthwhile.
Please see our dedicated Piano Restoration & Reconditioning page for further information.

Neglected & Problem Pianos
If a piano has not been serviced for many years, don’t assume that it is beyond repair.
We regularly encounter older and neglected instruments with several problems occurring together. The first step is to establish the actual condition of the piano and determine what work is genuinely necessary.
Where sensible, repairs can often be prioritised so that the most important problems are addressed first.
Over 40 Years of Piano Experience
With more than four decades of experience working with acoustic pianos, we can diagnose and repair a very wide range of mechanical, structural and tonal problems.
The repairs listed above are not exhaustive. If your particular piano problem isn’t mentioned, please contact us and describe the fault.
