If a piano has not been tuned for several years, it may have fallen significantly below standard concert pitch. In these cases, a normal fine tuning may not be sufficient and the piano may first require a pitch correction, sometimes called a pitch raise.

During a pitch correction, the overall tension of the piano is carefully adjusted to bring the instrument closer to the correct pitch before it is accurately tuned. Every piano is different, so its age, condition and how far it has fallen in pitch should be assessed before deciding what is appropriate.

Pianos that have been neglected for many years may need more than pitch correction alone. Sticking or uneven keys, worn action parts, poor regulation and other mechanical problems can affect how the piano plays. These can be assessed before tuning and, where appropriate, repairs or regulation can be recommended.
